About the artist
Ed Defensor is widely considered as one of the luminaries of Ilonggo art. He co-founded the Hubon Madiaas: The Panay Art Association (1983) alongside National Artist Jose Joya and was a Charter Member of the Arts Council of Iloilo, organized under the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). As a Board Member of the Arts Council, Defensor organized “Hublag: The Ilonggo Arts Festival” (1988-1996) and was instrumental in founding the Visayas Islands Visual Artists Exhibition Conference (VIVA-EXCON), the Philippines’ longest-running biennale. In 1995, he was elected to the NCCA’s National Visual Arts Committee.
Defensor has held numerous one-man shows in Iloilo, Manila, and New York, and participated in group exhibitions in South Korea, Singapore, and North Africa.
After retiring as an Associate Professor at UP Visayas, he created major public art commissions, including the 18-foot bronze Lin-ay Sang Iloilo at Iloilo City Hall, the Donato M. Pison Monument, and the St. Ignatius Monument.
