The core of this exhibit is not only that two artists have chosen to collectively reveal the creative currents flowing through them at this particular point in time. It is that these artists, bound together in what may, initially, seem like a master-and-apprentice arrangement, could be riding waves of change that will set them apart.

Kat is Kira’s mentor. Between them lies more than a decade of experience with and exposure to the medium they have settled on—for now. 

Kat, an award-winning artist, has roots in video and film. She has had solo and group exhibits in the Western Visayas region and in Manila. She is clear about what drives her creative process: “I’ve always chosen to be intentional in what I am trying to express because I believe that one should always be aware and driven not just by passion, but, most especially, by purpose.” Many of her earlier paintings have focused on the inner, spiritual struggle to tread the difficult and painful path of righteousness. For this exhibit, however, she has chosen to take calming breaths and curl into the comforting cocoon of warm, loving hugs and cuddly pets. 

Kira, on the other hand, is just beginning to set sail across the wide, wild expanse of life. She began with whimsical creations that included playful and colorful three-dimensional installations. For this tandem exhibit, we are treated to bright, joyful colors, especially in her rendition of animals. At the same time, youthful characters depict various stages of wakefulness or wistfulness. In a few others, however, we sense the rise of a darker, denser world of bleeding and vacant eyes. And lips, brimming with intense stories to tell.

The mentor has chosen to pause, to welcome, however temporarily, the peace and gentleness of a pastel world. Perhaps, it could be a brief respite, a mental and emotional retreat, in order to regroup for a resurgence of passion and purpose. Even warriors need a place to rest their swords and shields.

The student, meanwhile, could be headed into deeper waters. She is, after all, on the cusp of adulthood and all the excitement and existential challenges that it brings.

May both continue to bravely sail on and discover more of themselves in lands beyond their dreams.
